What is a Polymerous Daylily Bloom?

What is a Polymerous Daylily Bloom?

When it comes to the ever popular daylily, these plants can come in a range of different colours, designs, widths and heights. This is because there are now so many different hybrid variations of the original daylily, which has been popular for many centuries. In the mid 1990s, a new classification of daylilies was recognised by the American Hemerocallis Society, and they called this new variation 'polytepals'. However, this term was later changed in 2008 to 'polymerous' as the original was deemed incorrect. So, what is a polymerous daylily bloom? Well, a standard daylily normally has three outer sepals and three inter petals. However, any daylilies that have more than three are known as polymerous daylilies. These flowers can bloom on occasion in any cultivar although some cultivars are more likely to produce polymerous daylilies than others. This is something that has been used by hybridisers to create cultivars that will result in polymerous blooms the majority of the time. There are some people that think that the term polymerous is synonymous with double. However, some polymerous daylilies can have more than five times the standard number of petals.

Beautiful Blooms with Polymerous Daylilies

Polymerous daylilies could have four, five or more sepals and petals compared to the usual three that can be found on standard daylilies. The increased number of sepals and petals means that these flowers are able to add even more colour and variation to your garden, creating a stunning flowerbed and display that is bursting with colour.
Like the normal daylilies, polymerous daylilies are very easy to maintain, so they are great for those who want to be able to enjoy a beautiful, fragrant and colourful garden without having to invest a huge amount of time and effort into looking after it. As time goes on, there will be even more choice for those who want polymerous daylilies, as hybrid experts are continuing to work on the advanced development of these daylilies. As cultivars that produce mostly polymerous daylilies become more and more readily available, fans of daylilies and those who simply love to spend their time outdoors will be able to enjoy the diverse appearance and beauty of these blooms. This will enable gardeners and those who love the simplicity and beauty of daylilies to look forward to an even more stunning display of daylily flowers in their gardens and outdoor areas.
