Some Facts about Roses

Some Facts about Roses.

Roses are so popular that they are found in most gardens in Australia and around the world. There are different species of roses to choose from, there colours in spring through to summer and autumn will brighten up any area of your garden. They come in so many different colours, way to many colours to fit into a sentence. Some flower for a short time others flower without interruption till near winter before the frosts hit, while others only flower in spring. For the roses to keep blooming it is best to keep your roses pruned by deadheading the blooms as they wither, to Encourage Flowering On Your ROSES . Some roses are compact others are ground covers, so choose a lovely sunny spot in the garden to grow your beautiful roses. It would be more comfortable for your roses if they had some afternoon shade, this shade would be much kinder on the rose blooms. You could find a place in the garden that is protected from the wind. You can add lots of humus, rotted manure and compost to the ground soil and when finished should be well drained.
One important thing to keep in mind when planting a rose bush is not to bury the graft ever, this will only lead the rose bush to rot away. Always keep the bud union above the ground by one inch.

Watering and Pruning Roses

Watering your roses is best done when the ground completely dries out, never over water a rose they don’t like to be water logged. When you water roses it is preferred that you keep the water off the leaves and flowers, which is best done early morning, or in the evenings but not during the day.

Pruning a rose should be done in moderation if you prune your rose bushes too hard in winter this can wreck the rose bush for many years and make the rose bush weak in bringing up less new basil shoots. It is good to prune your rose bush to let the air flow through more in the centre of the rose bush after the first flush of flowers in spring, this will also help prevent black spot on roses.

While it is good to mulch ALL ROSE TYPES you can use hay, grass clippings anything that will rot back into the soil, but keep the mulch away from the stem and remember never cover cover the graft.

Rose Preventing Aphids on Roses

Most years when we grow roses we always see a visitor on the leaves and buds when they are about to burst into flower, this can be prevented. Yes we are talking about aphids, when the rose buds are appearing, this is the best time to prevent the aphids being on our roses, instead of having to get rid of them, the right time to do this is right before the rose buds appear on our roses.
This is how - mix up a two dessertspoons of epsom salts into a container of hot water, then mix that mixture into a bucket of cold water and be sure to add in a wetting agent. You can use this to spray on the leaves of your roses and the ground as well. This will do a great job of preventing aphids from entering your garden if you spray this mixture everywhere it could even last 12 months. It will also act as a fertiliser spray. You can spray this everywhere in your garden this will make your plants and lawns fresh, lush and green. So lets try this remedy and see how you go.  The trick is you will have to remember to do this every year at the same time just before your roses have buds, so there is no need to have to use harsh chemicals to keep the aphids away. You will need to apply the epsom salts to any potted roses you have as well.

So you don’t have to kill aphids or even see them in your garden, you only have to prevent them from being in your garden, this way you will be able to sit back and enjoy your lovely roses when they are at their best, this is when the roses produce their first flush of flowers for the season. You don't want to be out in the garden squashing and picking off or trying to hose off or kill aphids now do you.
